James Thomas HASTIE (SN 2086) was a 44 year old fireman who listed his permanent address as City Fire Brigade, Ballarat, when he enlisted on June 10th 1916. He trained with the 39th Battalion then embarked on the Shropshire on September 25th 1916, disembarking at Plymouth on November 11th. After just a month in the English winter he was admitted to the Fargo Military Hospital suffering from bronchitis. While in hospital he was further assessed, and it was decided that he should be returned to Australia. In July 1917 he left England on the Euripides and was discharged on December 21st as ‘medically unfit – debility – rheumatism’. He died in January 1959 at the age of 85.
