William MALONEY (SN 4253) was a 37 year old labourer from Warrenheip when he enlisted at Ballarat on July 10th 1915. He trained at Ballarat and Williamstown and joined the 14th Battalion reinforcements. He embarked from Melbourne on the Demosthenes on December 29th, stopped for a time in Egypt then in June 1916 joined the 14th Battalion in France. On April 11th 1917 he was reported as ‘missing in action’ at Bullecourt, but a German list dated June 16th 1917 confirmed that he had been captured and interned at the Dulmen Camp in Germany. After the Armistice he was repatriated to England, arriving there on Christmas Day 1918. He returned to Australia on the Derbyshire and disembarked at Melbourne on April 22nd 1919. He died in February 1959 at the age of 81.
